A 92-year-old Canadian grandmother is defying conventional beliefs about aging and fitness by hitting the gym four times a week and powering through squats with ease.
“I don’t even think about being 91. I feel the same as I felt when I was fifty, ” Giordano told Women’s Health magazine in an old interview.
Edna started gymming at 65 after retiring from her job at the local hospital, and continues to do so every other day with her daughter, Dalyce Radtke, documenting her progress on TikTok.
“Going to the gym on a regular basis in the morning helps me mentally. I obviously don’t want to go, but after I’ve done it, I feel so much better.”
Strength training:
Giordano’s gym sessions are usually four hours long, and she opted for working splits to target different areas of her body. Her movements include:
Walking:
Before hitting all the above exercises, Giordano hits the treadmill for shuttle runs and short jogs to warm up her body for the workout. This also improves her cardiovascular health. Besides using the treadmill, she also enjoys power walking at a local park, followed by leg swings and deep squats.
Mobility and Flexibility:
Edna starts her strength training with mobility and flexibility drills to reach the full range of motion and get that full stretch. The drill includes movements like:
NEAT activities:
Maintaining an active lifestyle outside the gym is equally important, and Edna is a firm believer in that. Including Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis (NEAT) activities like gardening and taking the stairs instead of the elevator helps improve mobility.
Granny Edna’s diet routine
Edna’s diet is simple and nutritional, and most importantly, full of protein. She enjoys eating chicken, vegetables, and salad, all prepared at home by her. But her favorite source of protein is fish.
Besides food, she remembers to take her necessary supplements like iron, multivitamins, and AG1. Since no one is safe from sweet temptations, a Cinnabon ice cream here and a chocolate there can be seen in her hand sometimes.
Following this routine has helped her avoid major illnesses and kept her fit and running even after crossing 90.
