There are many clues that signal the arrival of fall: pumpkin spice drinks returning to cafe menus, leaves changing colours and a return of denim to storefronts and our wardrobes.
Reformation is one of many brands that has updated its denim collection with new styles for the season, and the Miles Stretch Mid Rise Straight Leg Jeans are worth considering if you’re on the hunt for a pair that’s both stylish and sustainable.
Made from a blend of 97 per cent regeneratively grown cotton, 2 per cent elastomultiester and 1 per cent Spandex, these straight-leg jeans have a classic silhouette and a hint of stretch for all-day comfort. Which sounds great upon first glance, but how do these jeans hold up in real life? We put them to the test to find out.

When word of Reformation’s new Miles Stretch Mid Rise Straight Leg Jeans first crossed my desk, I’ll admit I was hesitant. My millennial brain flashed back to Fergie’s My Humps music video. But once I actually examined the pants, this new silhouette from the brand was clearly not the same skin-tight, straight-leg pair of slacks Mrs. Fergalicious herself famously rocked in the video. In fact, when the size 27 I ordered arrived a week or so later, they were pretty roomy, especially through the lower leg.
Unlike the Cary High Rise Jeans I’ve tried from Reformation, I didn’t need to size down for the Miles. The waist was snug. I prefer a looser fit, so I exchanged for my regular size (28). Those fit great, and comfort-wise, I find these jeans deliver. The standard length is a few inches too long for my 5’7” frame, so I’ll be getting these hemmed, but otherwise, a great true-to-size fit.
I personally find the solid all-over deep indigo colour of this wash — Discovery — makes these the most versatile of the three options. You can dress them up with heels and a nice top, or down with a casual blouse and sneakers as I did here. With a price tag over $250 CAD, that kind of multi-wear potential matters to me when I’m shopping.

Height: 5’4” Usual pant size: 28 or 6, curve-fit whenever possible Size ordered: 28 short
As anyone with a curvy figure will know, shopping for jeans can be daunting. It’s rare to find a pair that fits well through the waist, hips and thighs — let alone a pair that’s also the right length for my 5’4” frame. I was cautiously optimistic that the stretch and the different lengths available in the new Miles Straight Leg Jeans (short, standard and long) would work out, and I was shocked to find that they were a Goldilocks-like perfect fit upon arrival.
The mid-rise falls just below my belly button and isn’t too scary a transition from my usual pairs of high-waisted jeans. The short inseam also comes in at 30”, which is just the right length to cover my shoes without dragging on the floor. Reformation recommends this inseam as “Best for heights under 5’4,” but anyone under 5”2 may still need to get these hemmed. I opted for the Stormi wash, which has a classic medium blue look that’s ideal for casual wear.
I didn’t expect to love these jeans as much as I do, but they have already become one of my most comfortable pairs thanks to the relaxed straight-leg cut and the forgiving fabric blend. My one gripe? The front pockets on these jeans are comically small. So small, in fact, that I can only fit about half my hand inside, so forget about keeping a phone or wallet in there. If they had a bigger pocket, these jeans would be a 10/10 in my books.

Height: 5’6” Usual pant size: 31, regular length Size ordered: 32 regular
I have been a size 29 to 31 (depending on where I’m shopping) for as long as I can remember, and if you’re also part of the wide-hips-slim-waist club, you know jean shopping can be spooky. Recently, I discovered that when I’m going out, I like my jeans to be a little on the looser side, so for these ones, I took a chance and sized up.
Mid-rise is not a new fit for me; I made the switch from high-waisted to mid-rise last season, but finding a mid-rise jean that actually hits where you want can be a challenge. The Miles Stretch Mid Rise jeans hit right below my belly button in the regular length and I’m exactly 5’6 – perfect. The length was surprisingly slightly long, but I plan on making these my going-out jeans, so I will more than likely always be wearing them with heels or a heeled boot.
The wash is what really drew me, though. I have so many dark wash jeans; it was time to add a pair that was on the lighter side and I’m so glad I did. The Surfin wash will be great in the summer with lighter colours, but also work in the colder months paired with navy, black or brown knits.
Now, would the size down fit me? Most likely, but like I said, when I’m out for dinner or drinks, I don’t want my pants digging into me. The stretchy fabric of these jeans is honestly the ultimate going-out life hack: comfort with no sacrifice. I’m super happy with these pants and I know they’re going to be the jeans I reach for when I’m hittin’ the town.
